From self indulgent personal sites to single minded communities wherein the center of the universe is some obscure British Sci-Fi actor who appeared in episode #57 of Red Dwarf. the internet allows us to share what, in normal world, would seem creepy and obsessive.
Online, the most outrageous assertion can enter the canon of factual reality when it is surrounded by like minded mole-people. For everyone who seriously believes that Robert Pollard is God, there are a dedicated group of people who will endlessly concur until they are granted 501(c)(3) status. Then they will post compromising photos of their ex-girlfriends.
I've gotten off track.
What I really wanted to know this morning: What was the greatest band EVER? It's an impossible question to answer. It's the sound of one hand clapping, but with guitars and drums.
It is interesting that when querying the term BAND you will usually get references to Rock bands, and not Jazz groups or new age ensembles. "Band" has become a token in the language for rock'n'roll, a recent development (i might guess) in revolt against hyper-classification. (I remember, as a child, being confused that the Beatles were described on their early albums as a Pop Combo. I thought they were a 'band'.)
The idea that any BAND could be greatest is absurd in itself, but the added caveat of EVER, well, I don't imagine that any of these search results will be updated should some trumping sound emerge from successive generations.
